One of the questions I hear most often is, “How long does it take to build one of your tables?” It sounds like a question about woodworking, but it really isn't. The truth is, it doesn't take four or five months to build a table. It takes four or five months to discover one. At JAH Fine Woodworking, we're not simply building furniture—we're discovering a table that has never existed before.

We're Building More Than Furniture

The majority of a custom project isn't spent cutting wood. It's spent learning about the people who will live with it. We talk about your home, your architecture, your family, how you gather, what inspires you, and what you hope this table will become. Those conversations are not delays. Just build whatever you think is best.” I appreciate the confidence, but my response is usually, “Then we're not ready.” My goal is never to build my table. It's to build yours. I can ask questions, provide ideas, challenge assumptions, and guide the process—but I can't decide what your family should love. That discovery belongs to you.

Participation Is Part of the Craftsmanship

One of the defining characteristics of a JAH project is participation. Clients aren't spectators; they're collaborators. The conversations, sketches, renderings, revisions, and shared discoveries become part of the finished piece. If someone isn't willing to participate, they're not ready to commission a truly custom heirloom.

Can We Move Faster?

Sometimes we can accelerate the schedule if calendars align and decisions are made quickly. What we will never accelerate is thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, or integrity. We may compress the calendar, but we never compress the craftsmanship.

Architecture Taught Me This

After decades in architecture, I learned that successful projects begin with a clear vision before construction ever starts. Furniture is no different. Once the destination is understood, every decision reinforces it. Discovery isn't lost time—it's one of the most valuable investments in the entire project.
